CROSSING THE STREET

"On the other side. There is only the other side."
— Andros Dresamore i

Critical note

by André de Sá Moreira

The artist crosses a pedestrian crossing, returns, crosses again, and so on. Accompanied by Lou Reed's deep, weary voice, he transforms the gesture into a ritual. Each return trip becomes a refusal of a destination. It is a performance of wandering, of non-choice, of refusing to reach a destination. The city fades away to become nothing more than an endless space of passage, an infinite space.

He manages to make the pedestrian crossing—a symbol of urban order—totally absurd and poetic. By refusing to arrive, he rejects the very purpose of the act.
